UNDER LABOUR RULE.
CHRISTCHTTRCH FINANCES.
SURPLUS ANTICIPATED.
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, this day
The City Council's financial year which closes on Saturday is the first year in which the finances of the city have been controlled by a Labour majority on the council.
Councillor D. G. Sullivan, M.P., chairman of the Finance Committee, expressed satisfaction with the results. He recalled that when the estimates were being prepared the council was faced with heavy commitments, and he proposed that a sum of £5000 should be transferred to the district fund account out~of approximately £7000 in the Halswell quarries account, and that £8000 should be transferred from the municipal electricity department account. "While it is not possible for me to make an authoritative statement until the financial year has closed, I can say quite definitely that there will be no necessity to take the £8000 from the municipal electricity department account," said Councillor Sullivan. "With regard to the quarries acccrtint, an amount of £5000 was recently transferred to the district fund account. Of that £5000 it will be necessary to use at the most from £1000 to £1500, so that the surplus to carry into the next year should be from £3500 to £4000."
