DEPRESSION IN TRADE.
WELLINGTON LEAST AFFECTED
GREAT BUILDING ACTIVITY
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
WELLINGTON, this day.
Though there has been certain depression in trade in New Zealand during the past twelve months, Wellington has perhaps been least affected of all centres. Indeed, in some directions the financial year now drawing to a close has been a •remarkable one. This applies particularly to building activity, which is usually accepted as a barometer of a city's progress and faith in its future. With three more days to go the amount of money which has been invested in building projects in the metropolitan area of Wellington during the current financial year has already reached the £2,000,000 mark, and is expected to go a little beyond it. These figures are based upon contract prices of buildings and building work for which permits have been issued during the period mentioned, and are therefore reliable.
