STOLE MOTHER'S GOLD.
YOUNG MAN GIVEN A CHANCE,
WEEK SPENT IN GAOL,
After having spent a week in gaol on remand, as the magistrate explained last week, "Just to show you where you are heading," Hugh Joseph O'Brien (28) appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., at the Police Court to-day for sentence an a eharge of stealing £7 2/0 belonging to his mother.
Chief Detective Hammond said that O'Brien went to his mother's house during her absence and broke open a box, stealing seven sovereigns and a halfcrown, which she had saved up. The money had been spent on liquor. When arrested accused had only fourpence on him. Nothing concerning dishonesty was previously known against O'Brien. The magistrate convicted and ordered O'Brien to come up for sentence within six months, but tne probation officer suggested that if the period was extended to twelve months accused would automatically be placed on probation. "He is a thorough drunkard/' was Mr. Campbell's description of O'Brien. Mr. McKean ordered him to come up for sentence within twelve months.
