WATERFRONT BATHS.

TESTS UNSATISFACTORY.

FILTRATION RECOMMENDED.

MAYOR MAKES STATEMENT,

Tho Reserves Committee of the City Council within the last few days has made special visits to the public baths of Auckland, and has been responsible for further tests being made of the harbour water, which have been subject to bacteriological examination.

In order that the public might be made fully aware of the position, a spccial report was prepared, which was to have been handed to the Press today. An "Auckland Star" representative waited upon the Mayor, Mr. Geo. Baildon, and the acting-chairman of the committee, Mr. J. B. Paterson, this morning, with a request for the information. The Mayor expressed himself entirely ignorant of tlie existence of such a report, and asked the newspaper man where he got the information, concluding by saying that it must have been from Mr. Brinsden, the chairman of the committee.

In reply to questions, the Mayor said: 'It is true wo have had further tests made, and wo find that the water is unsatisfactory. At least, it is not as satisfactory as tho council thinks it should bo, and we are going to remedy it. We are going to keep the Parnell closed in the meantime, and the committee will recommend the council to instal filtration plants at Shelly Beach Baths and at Parnell. This will mean both filtration and chlorination. As far as the Tepid Baths in Hobson Street are concerned, a tiltmtion plant is working now, but it is going to be fitted with a chlorination scheme as well.

"The committee has been out to St. Cuthbert's College and seen the system of filtration and chlorination there, and has been very impressed with the efficacy of the scheme."

It is understood that one of the recommendations of the committee will be that at both Shelly Beach and Parnell a price should be obtained for heating the baths.
