HOCKEY GROUNDS LEASE.

FOUR TENDERS RECEIVED.

NO DECISION MADE

The Auckland Hockey Association's lease of the Dilworth Trust Board 8 grounds at Remuera expires on October 31, and some apprehension is felt by hockey enthusiasts by reason of the fact that four tenders for the lease have been received by the board. After consideration by the finance committee, the tenders were referred to the full board. No decision has yet been made. It is stated that the Hockey Association is endeavouring to renew the lease, but by throwing the grounds open for competition the board has opened the door to other sports bodies. The p-ounds at Remuera have long been envied by various sports bodies cramped for playing space. The lease is for 21 years, from November 1, with the of renewal for a further period of 21 years. The board's action does not affect the Remuera Tennis and Bowling Clubs. It is stated quite unofficially that the Girls' Interhouse Sports Association has named the highest figure, and may, therefore, prove the successful tenderer. Hockey players see a gleam of hope in this, since the interhouse organisation is not very active in the winter months, «nd might consider favourably a suggestion that the grounds be ns«d by the Hockey Association during the season. Should such an arrangement be made— and as yet everything is "in the air —it is probable that both organisations I would effect a substantial financial Bavins. An annual loss of something like £100 has been suffered by the Hockey Association, the summer months failing to return .sufficient revenue to make up the total sum required for payment of the lease. Income has been derived from tennis courts and the bowling club, together with small rentals from the cricket pitches, but the association s best efforts failed to the annual deficit. Until an announcement » made respecting the granting of the Wase, those concerned are not inclined to make a detailed statement about the matter.
