MOTOR REGULATIONS.

PREVENTION JJF ACCIDENTS.

NEED OF CAREFUL DRIVING.

ADDRESS TO MOTORISTS

It was stated that seventy per cent of accidents for which drivers of motor vehicles are responsible could be prevented if injudicious speed were avoided, cutting of corners stopped, and hand signals observed, in the course of an address given last evening to motorists by Mr. G. W.. Hutchinson, secretary of: tjie Auckland Automobile Association. Mr. Hutchinson said that national motor law had been the aim of the association, as there had been far too many accidents in Auckland. In referring to speed, he said that it was a matter of circumstance as a fast speed on an open road might be permissible. Many motorists disregarded signalling, and it was known that some licensing authorities were too lenient in the issue of driving licenses. It was considered that the test should be strict with uniformity of method. No leniency should be shown Jo a motorist convicted of intoxication.

| The speaker dealt at length with the regulations regarding speed, and referring to the dazzle problem, said that scientists had been endeavouring to find a solution for many vears. He criticised the stipulation that rubv reflectors should be insisted upon in addition to a tail lamp.

Mr. Hutchinson said that the Auckland City Council appeared to be a pioneer in motor legislation, and a number of things m the by laws, which had not I>een introduced in the South, were now lii the national regulations.
