BOWLING.

THE PAIRS TOURNAMENT.

INTERSECTION ROUNDS.

A CLOSE TUSSLE.

The fourth round of inter-section play in the pairs tournament took place on the Mount Eden green this morning. The weather conditions were perfect, and the green in beautiful order, although just a little holding at first, on account of the rain during the night.

Johnson and Jones (Stanley) had the bye, as they survived the first play as the only two-lifers, after a dramatic match against Clarke and Bremner (West End). A measure gave them the three they wanted for a tie on tlhe last head, and on the play-off they held two shots which it was almost impossible for Bremner to reach. This left four pairs to play this morning, all with one life. Davis and Pearce (Otahuhu) defeated Murray and Haslam (Rawhiti) by 27 to 7 on the 19th head, after leading all the way. The match was relieved of monotony by a few flashes of brilliance on the part of the leads, who both drew numerous touchers, / but the Otahuhu skip out-played his opponent in both drawing and driving.

Most attention, however, was given to the other rink, where Clarke and Bremner (West End) met Kissling and Ryan (Remuera). The latter won the tournament last year, and the former pair have been in the public eye for years. The score was fairly even at first, and on the fifth head Ryan led by Bto 5. Bremner equalled this with a three on the sixth, and then scored on seven more heads in succession, carrying the score to 21 to 8 on the! thirteenth head. Ryan was playing well, having all the advantage of the opposing lead not being up to his usual form, but when, there was any luck it usually went the other way, in addition to which Bremner was up to championship form. However, he kept on playing very steadily all the time, and a few openings gave him a chance to recover, until at the nineteenth head he was only five down at 19 to 24. The twentieth was unlucky for Bremner. Trying to get Hd of Ryan's shot bowl he switched the jack across to two opposing woods, whereas the opposite way would have given him three or four up. This left Ryan only three down on the last head. Clarke was over, and Kissling had one nearly on the jack, Ryan pressing out Clarke's nearest for two. Bremner put a beauty just behind the jack, for second shot, and although Ryan changed his hand, and got exactly the shot he wanted, he pushed out his own also, leaving him on? " "inner tihrew away his last br \~ived to meet Johnson a t in the fifth round, Davis a; .ting the bye. If Pearce wi... .41 e remaining rounds, the tournament will conclude to-day, but if he loses either of them a further round will be necessary. MANUREWA TOURNAMENT.
