AN INSTITUTE OF FORESTRY.
The purpose of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry inaugurated recently at Rotorua is "to further the development of technical forestry and the interests of the profession of Forestry in New Zealand. - ' In view of the very rapid expansion of Afforestation schemes in this country within the past five years it is clearly desirable that facilities should be provided for the technical and professional training of those who in various capacities will take an active part in the direction and control of privately-owned plantations or State Forest reserves. The new Institute is intended to give the calling of the forester a definite status here, and admission to the higher grades of membership should come to be recognised as a most .valuable personal and professional distinction. Instruction in all the theoretical and scientific aspects of Forestry is already provided at our University College. The Institute is designed to serve an extremely useful public purpose by publishing original papers, by eneouraging original research, and by bridging the gap between academic study and professional work. The officials of the Institute include the Director of Forestry, the Professor of. Forestry at Auckland University College, and some of the most distinguished and experienced forestry experts in the Dominion, and we hare no doubt that the Institute-will speedily justify its existence and realise the high i expectations of its founders.
