HELPING EX-SOLDIERS.
BED CKOM AJTD ST. JOHX.
ANNUAL MEETING OF COUNCIL.
The annual general meeting of the Dominion Council of the New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John, was held at the ftnrn Hall yesterday afternoon, the Hon. Sir R. He a ton Rhodes, MX.C., presiding. In moving the adoption of the annual report the chairman said that the work of the Red Cross Society was not finished, nor would it be for some time. When the homes in each of the four centres were established it was thought that they would not be necessary for any length of time, but experience had shown that they were always full. It was now realised that as men became older they desired to return to the homes more and more frequently. The fnods were being used up,-- and ultimately fresh appeals might have to be made to the public. It was hoped that that day would not come for some time. While the funds in the numerous centres were being depleted rapidly, the total funds rne disposal of the society still appeared large,- said Mr. J. A. Flesher, of Chrfstchurch, in seconding the motion. It looked as though » the fnnds in Christchurch might not last as long as others, and the time might come when Christchurch would have to remind Auckland of a promise made some years ago—that Auckland would come to the rescue should finances run short. The report was adopted. All the officers were re-elected: —President, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C.; ▼ice-presidents, Sir James Gunson, Mr. L. O. H. Tripp (Wellington), Mr. Flesher (Christchurch), and the Rev. V. 0. Bryan King (Otago); chairman, New Zealand executive, Hon. Dr. W. E. Collins; members from New Zealand council to sit on New Zealand executive, Mr. J. Burnett and Mrs. L. Blundell.
> The following resolution, passed by the New Zealand executive in December, 1927, was agreed to: —"That inquiry be made of the hon. solicitors regarding >teps necessary to effect alteration to the society's title, to that of New Zealand Red Cross Society, and that it be a recommendation to the New Zealand Council to effect the alteration."
