POST OFFICE THEFTS.
HUSBAND AMD WIFE CHARGED BOTH PLEAD GUILTY. *By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Wednesday. • At the court to-day William John McKernan, postmaster of Whakapara, and his wife, Caroline McKernan, were charged with the tliefct of postal notes of the value of £8 17/6, of which 15/2 had been recovered. It was alleged that notes for amounts up to one pound and threepence had disappeared on different dates in the latter part of January and the first week of February. The postmaster was further charged with failing to account for £15 which had been deposited on January 30 to Edna Reed's Savings Bank account. His wife was charged with having received three of the postal notes. In the course of evidence it was stated that husband and wife had alternately taken the whole blame. The magistrate sentenced the male accused to a month's reformative treatment in respect of the failing to account for £15, and on the other charges admitted him to probation for two years, restitution to be made during that period. The woman was admitted to three years' probation,
Mrs. McKerna, who is in failing health, fainted on hearing the judgment.
