PROFESSIONAL THIEVES.
GANG FROM AUSTRALIA. TWO GIVEN HARD LABOVB. WOMAN WAS TO FOLLOW. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. Two professional pickpockets, who arrived in November from Sydney, were sentenced in the Supreme Court this morning. Edward Lawson, aged 30, and George Wallace, 31, were found guilty last month on a charge of having stolen £13 from Paul Aurish at Paekakariki. Counsel for Lawson admitted that he had 31 convictions, and said it was ficult to say anything in accused's favour. Wallace had 38 pervious convictions. Detective-Sergeant Holmes said the men arrived from Australia with another two, and were to have been followed by a woman. The other two had been deported. Mr. P. S. K. Macassey, Crown Prosecutor: Would you consider this an organised gang? The Detective: Yes. The Chief Justice said he was satisfied the prisoners had for years been pursuing a life of crime. It was clear that they were professional thieves and pickpockets who had come to New Zealand to transfer their operations. Each man was sentenced to two years' hard labour.
