TE AROHA MOUNTAIN FIRE.

CHECKED AND CONTROLLED,

MAYOR THANKS VOLUNTEERS. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) TE AROHA, this day. The fires on Te Aroha Mountain were checked and controlled on Saturday, and all danger to the town is believed to have passed. The Mayor, Mr. R. Coulter, dispatched every available borough employee on Saturday up the hill to extinguish as many of the burning logs as possible, and to make fire-breaks.

The eflForts of those who volunteered at the Mayor's call to fight the fires on Friday evening did much to avert the destruction of the fir tree forest at the base of the mountain, and also the mineral bath houses, said Mr. Coulter.

"These people are entitled to the highest praise* for their unselfish service under conditions involving much personal risk and danger," added the Mayor. "The fire was lighted in the Ruakaka area, without the permission of the borough council, and full measures are being taken to sheet home the responsibility." The Mayor and also Superintendent* P. Pilkington, chief of the fire brigade, said that people did not realise how great the .danger was on Thursday evening when 18 houses in Puriri Street were menaced.
