AUSTRALIAN CANNED FRUIT.
LOWER PRICES PROBABLE.
There is every possibility that prices for Australian canned fruits will rule lower this Reason, according to the followTl' appeared in the "Argus" under date of January 26: — ' For three years distributing prices of canned fruits have been fixed at the 1 beginning of each season by an association ' of canners. This year one of the largest • in the association « nenfw'« a " ! A"" now issued an inde- < Pr,C S i ,St J°, r canned which contains substantial reductions on the ' prices prevail,ng last season. The prices < quoted are about 8/3 a dozen tin' 7r : 2/ a dozen less than last vear. No other ! canners have yet announced their prices and many of the firms express doubt whether, they win be able to P opera^ the price levels established by the independent firm. The prices of jams made of the new season's fruits have also been considerably reduced. by one firm but prices announced by rival companies; although lower than those of last year are as much as 1/ff ft dozen tins higher' The association has decided not to issue an official price list, this season. Members contend thr*. the prices announced will not leave a margin of profit for merchants dis-1 tr.'buting their goods, and it issuggested 1 that the independent firm is endeavour-! ing to increase sales by offering goods to retail traders. In defence of the policy which it has adopted, the firm states that it is able t»V meet any competition, and that it i« not now prepared to be bound in regard to prices by co-operative can- , neries which are receiving the support of the Government."
