"BEATING" BOOKIES.
WIRELESS CONSPIRACY
BERLIN, February S.
A widespread conspiracy to defraud bookmakers by the use of wireless was revealed through the arrest of ringleaders at Hamburg. The method adopted by the men was to rent a room in a district frequented by bookmakers, and to instal a three-valve receiving set. They intercepted and decoded tbe Morse messages giving results of races from Paris.
These were signalled to their accomplices in the street, who laid bets" accordingly. Sometimes the results of races were obtained 10 minutes before they were received by the bookmakers. It is believed the ruse was practised in many towns in Germany.. Suspicions were aroused by the heavy losses oi bookmakers.
