The present Mayor, Mr. J. E. Fow, has the longest period of service, having been elected to office in 1916, and, with the exception of two periods, has held it ever since.
In expressing his thanks for the presentation, Mr. Fow said that 110 one, looking back on the past 50 years of Hamilton, could but admire the optimism and courage of the early pioneers in the municipal life of the town. It was impossible to set a limit to the possibilities of the town as an educational and commercial centre. The Borough Council had left a record of clean administration. No breath of scandal had ever sullied the name of any Hamilton Borough Council, and the reputation of the early pioneers was a source of inspiration and encouragement to their successors.
The Hon. J. A. Young and several former Mayors and their representatives also addressed the gathering.
