NORTHCOTE MAIN STREET.

CONCRETE PAVING FINISHED.

FROM WHARF TO MEMORIAL.

The concrete paving of Northcote's main street is at length an accomplished fact. The work has been proceeding between the wharf and the war memorial in Onewa Road for the past year, the contractors being J. J. Craig, Limited. The centre of the roadway has been laid in concrete for a width of ISft and the length of this formation is a little over one mile. The shoulders on either side are to be tar-sealed, and the reconstruction of the footpaths of Queen Street is also included in the contract.

The deposit of the last bucketful of concrete on the job about 4.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon was signalised by the gang of workmen around the con-crete-mixing machine giving lusty cheers, and the display of a flag on top of the mixer, denoting the completion of the work.

Most of the length of concrete is already open for vehicular traffic for the full width, but the half-width just finished will not be ready for traffic until the "curing" period of 2S days has elapsed.

The few chains of roadway between the concrete paving and the wharf is to be finished in laykold. In order to obviate the closing of the vehicular landing for traffic, it is now intended to do this portion on a Saturday afternoon when the heavy traffic is at'a minimum. Thus no interruption of motor vehicular traffic will be necessarv.

The formation of the shoulders of the roadway should be completed by the time the last section of green concrete has "cured," so that this portion of Queen Street should be out of the contractors' hands in a month.
