TRADE OUTLOOK IN FIJI.
A FAVOURABLE BALANCE
SUVA, February 2.
The Customs returns are now available for the last twelve months. They show that while the trade balance is a favourable one, the total trade of the colony has decreaaed as compared with 1926. Yet, taking all things together, there is every room for believing that the colony ia on the upgrade. Prospects are good for an increased output of both sugar and copra, while rubber should also improve, for Waidoi is increasing substantially in its output. The Customs figures show that while 1928 had a total trade of £3,221, 372, the total for 1927 was £3,220,671. While exports increased from £1,740,427 to £1,997,374, imports decreased from £1,480,945 to £1,223,303 in 1927. Sugar improved from 56,991 tons valued at £808,195, to 72,753 tons valued at £1,125,215. Copra showed a slight decline from 27,868 tons to 26,560 tons last year. Bananas rose in export value from | £138,040 to £157,819. The prospects for I copra are brighter partly by new areas coming into bearing, but also because owing Ito the clearing of the Levuana moth by [the pychomia fly, most of Viti Levu, which wan for many years practically a non-producing copra area, now promises to become quite a large producer.
