WANGANUI MEETING.

HANDICAPS FOR CUP AND FLYING.

THE WEIGHTS REVIEWED.

The weights have been declared for the first day of the Wanganui meeting, and those most discussed will be the Cup and the Flying Handicap.

In the Cup, Ta MonanuT is given the post of honour with 9.9 This horse ran a good race in the New Zealand Cup for over a mile and a half, and on the following day, with 9.5, won the Metropolitan Handicap, twelve furlongs, beating Footfall, Count Cavour and others. He failed in the Auckland Cup, with 9.0. and has not started since, being a bit sore alter the event. He. is now asked to carry 9.9, and I think he will liave lo be at his very best to beat some of those lower down over a mile and three-quar-ters. Hynanna has 9.5. He won the Consolation Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Trentham, with 8.11, in 2.4J — a great gallop—and going on to Egmont, annexed the Cup, one mile and a-half, with 8.13, beating Mint Leaf at a difference of 121b, Bright Glow 131b, Yoina 41b, and Royal Mint 201b. Piutliair was handicapped at 9.0 ; in that event, but did not start. He has now to give Piuthair 91b, so that he is 101b worse off with her compared with the Egmont adjustments. If Piuthair was at her best she would cause him a lot of trouble. Eden Hall has been awarded 8.3. He finished fourth in the Auckland Cup, and recently won the Takapuna Cup with 8.2, and he may have to be reckoned with. There is no doubt about him being able to stay the distance. \oma won the Fendalton Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, at Riccarton in the s P rin g> and since then ran third in the Malone Memorial Handicap, nine furlongs, at Stratford. He failed under 8.9 in the Egmont Cup, and even with 8.2 he will find that some of those above him will »veep hirn busy at Wanganui. Mandane won the Summer Cup, one mile and a-quarter, at Ellersre, which is her best performance this season. She will have half a mile further to go on this occasion, and has 111b more to carry. Mint Leaf is a likely sort, for he is apparently just coming into form. He was third in the Takapuna Cup, with 7.11, and finished second in the Egmont Cup, with 8.1. He lias been handicapped at 7.11 for the big event at Wanganui, and should run well. Joy Bird has won the Feilding and Woodville Cups, and finished a good second to Lady Desmond in the Manawatu Cup. one mile and a-half, and finshed fourth in the Wellington Cup, of a similar distance, carrying 7.5. She has only to be right to run a good race. Atereria has won up to a mile and a-quarter recently, while of the others, Greengrocer and Novar may be the best. Probably just now Hynanna, Mint Leaf, Eden .nail and Piuthair may be most in favour. The Flying Handicap. In the Flying Handicap, The Hawk is top weight, with 9.7. He finished third in the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham, with 8.10, and on the following day, with 8-11, _ won the Metropolitan Handicap, beating Aussie, Limited, Money Order' Eulalie and others. Weighted at he finished a go i t' ird in the City Handicap to Money Order and Cimabue. Kiosk has proved himself a good sprinter this season. He won the Flying Handicap at Wanganui in the spring with 8.0, was third in the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap, with 8.3, won the Criterion Handicap, seven furlongs, on the next day, with 8.4. and later the Feilding Stakes, with 9.5. He was also second in the Palmerston North Stakes to Reremoana, with 10.0. He lias now 9.3, and is not badly treated. Rapine cannot be readv. Civility and Paganelli have 8.8. Tlie former finished third over seven furlongs at Riccarton in November, and that is the best she has done this season. In regard to Paganelli, he would only have to do his best all tlie wav to be very hard to dispose of. He seemed to tire over the last bit in some of his six furlong efforts. Benzora won the Shorts Handicap at Trentham in the spring, and would only need to be at his best to take a lot of beating with 8.7. Lady Cavendish finished second in the *itzherbert_ Handicap to Lausanne carrying 8.5, which is her best performance this season, and she is now up lib. Vast Acre will be one of the most fancied for she has raced well this season. She has started on eleven occasions for five firsts, four seconds and two thirds. With 8.4 she will keep the majority very busy. Limited has very little to commend him this season, but if he reproduced his best form, 8.2 would not stop him The same remarks apply to Shirley, who has lib less. Ti-tree won well at Takapuna, and at 8.1 will have to be considered if started, for he has a lot of pace. Bonogne, High Finance and Covent Garden may be the best of the nm GrS ' « ob -?- bly the best fancied iust ir m- I ** last Acre > Kiosk, Paganelli and Ti-tree. b

KIOSK AND PALETA IN FORM.

LYSANDER BUILT UP AGAIX.

(By Telegraph.— Special to "Star. ')

WANGANUI, this day. F. Lind left for New Plymouth this morning with Elysianor, which geldin«r is to run in hurdle events at the Taranaki meeting. Yesterday moraine Elysianor was given a round over the fences, and jumped in his usual proficient style. He has 9.9 in Thursday's race, and should run prominently. W. H. Dwyer also left for New Plymouth this morning, taking with him Kiosk and Paleta. The former is engaged in the Flying Handicap on Thursday, in which he has 9.3. He is very well and should give a good account of himself on Saturday. The son of Tea Tray will probably take on the Taranaki Stakes. Paleta has come very fast during the last week or so, and the son of Leighton will probably win a race very soon. He is not engaged on Thursday, but will be seen out on the second day at New Plymouth. White Ringlet has not done much fast work since winning at FoxtonJ but she slipped over five furlongs in good style

this morning, and W. Higgins might'win! a race with her at the Wanganui meeting. ] Covent Garden beat Thaw easily over half-a-mile, running the first quarter in 245, and the full distance in 50s, doing it well. The Thespian filly Curtain was going along very well up till last week, and gave promise of running prominently in the Juvenile Handicap here next week. However, she has contracted a cold again, and has been thrown out of work. Lysander has built up well since returning from Auckland, where he lightened up considerably. He slipped over five furlongs this morning comfortably in 1.45, the quarter taking 25s and three furlongs 375. It has been stated that some gear was to be tried on Lysander when next raced, but this is incorrect, as there is no such intention. Double Mint and Hallownoon were companions in a spin over half-a-mile, which they left behind in 525, Double Mint doing it nicely. This was the first gallop either of them had done since Christmas. King Mart was given easy work on'the plough. The son of King Mark ran a fine race on the second day at Hawera, and he gives every promise of turning out useful.

Mask is being given easy work at present, as he will not be wanted until the Auckland Easter meeting. The same applies to Episode.
