TYPHOID OUTBREAK.
SUSPECTS AT MANGONUI. MATTER BEING INVESTIGATED HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S PRECAUTIONS. Discussing the reported outbreak of typhoid fever in the Lake Ohia district, in the Mangonui County, this morning, l)r. Herbert tliesson, medical officer of health in the North Auckland district., said that latest advice received from the doctor in charge of the Mangonui Hospital was to the effect that seven suspected cases Mere in the institution. Five were there yesterday, and two others had been placed under observation. far the swabs returned had been negative, but nevertheless symptoms of typhoid were present. Further examinations had been ordered, and meantime nothing was being left to chance. The health inspector for the district, as well as district nurses, were investigating the trouble, and all necessary precautions were being taken. It was reported by telephone later in the day that no further cases had been discovered. In common with other parts of the Dominion, the Northland has experienced a particularly dry spell, and although light rain foil for three days following Sunday, January 15, it was not sufficient to augment supplies in the various districts. Consequently natives and others have had to rely on creeks which had been dried up considerably. At Te Hapua, on the northern end of Parengarenga Harbour, there has been a water shortage for some considerable time, and it lias had to be conveyed to the township from various places round the harbour. Health matters generally, and particularly Te Hapna's water supply, are matters which will be investigated by the Minister for Health (Hon. J. A. Young) during his tour of the North earlv next month.
