Pink Note, who carried about his cup weight, was always doing it well, and on the deep plough track covered nine furlongs in 2.3, the first half taking 54s and the last mile 1.50. Set Sail and Lucy Locket were sent over a mile on the plough at stron» pace. The former moved very attract tivelv, the last seven furlongs taking 1..42. Gieseler stated this morning that be would like to see a shower to take the sting out of the going, and there was i just ch.'iiv" that Set Sail might not start in the big race. Kapuna was too good for Beauty Light over six furlongs, which occupied 1.20. Brightling was given long, slow work on the plough. Wingatui and Felony ran over nine furlongs on the plough in 2.5 2-5, the last mile takinsr 1.51 1-5. Karitane and Scion, who looks very big and lusty, ran five furlongs in 1.8 1-5, the last four of which took 54 3-ss. Rob, who was can-vine nearly lOst, easily accounted for Attaboy over four furlongs on the plough in 50 4-ss. The Canterbury contingent arrived today and will be working to-morrow. Mr. H. A. Pierce, who does most of the handicapping for the Southland meetings, will make the handicaps for the second day.
