TE KUITI-HANGATIKI. GRANT FOR COMPLETION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, Saturday. The Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce lias received the following eommunieation from the chairman of the Main Highways Board, Mr. M. H. Wynyard: — "You will be glad to hear that thf Main Highways Board has agreed to tind the sum of £ISUO free in connection -with the completion of this road. The original estimate was £S(i(i() and the present estimate to complete is £!ISOO. Tin! resolution of the board is to the effect that it will lind this excess of £1SII(I as free money. I think you will consider the arrangement satisfactory to the county, your chamber and the travelling public, as it should enable the road to lie completed at an early date.''
I lie road referred to i< the Te KuitiTe Kiimi-Ilangatiki portion of the main highway, wnicli cuts off seven miles of rough. dangerous load with numerous hair-pin bends on the northern side ot le Kniti. It will also be a much more direct route to and fro f. Waitomo caves from the south. The road, which is perfectly flat and straight, follo-ws the Main Trunk line up the Te Kttmi valley, which is full of interesting Maori history. The road passes within a chain •if the spot where the natives under Maliuki had Mr. Wilson llursthou.se (surveyor) tied to a tree, for a day anil night. Several native fortifications can lie easily discerned on adjacent hilltops. The new roarling will be shorter and more ' interesting to tourists visiting Wa itcmo.
