SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.

EDEN LOSES THE LEAD,

AX INTERESTING POSITION,

The climax of the changes resulting from club senior teams being 'weakened by the absence of representative players was the second defeat within ten days of Eden, previously the leading team, and a jump to the front by Ponsonby and North Shore, with Eden and Parnell together a point behind the new leaders. It has been a general post, however, which adds fresh interest to the concluding club matches of the season, with four teams all within striking distance of the honours.

Eden's weakened attack on Saturday was taken full advantage of by the United Suburbs batsmen, whose reply to Eden's first knock of 224 was a score of 322, characterised by bright batting by Martin (62) and Leikis (•38).

With a securc score of 38S behind them Ponsonby got Grafton out once for 177, but the latter made a stubborn fight of it in the second innings, Horspool getting 109, not out, and 212 runs were put on for five wickets. Ponsonby to be content with a first-innings victory.

Parnell, who had made 267, got rid of University for 162, but in the follow on the students put on 210 for four wickets, and Parnell's win was on the first innings.

North Shore, with a lead of JBO on the first innings, got Y.M.C.A. out the second time for 204, and then made the necessary 34 runs without loss, getting a ten-wicket victory. The best bowling of the day was done by Aitken (Parnell), who got five University wickets for 31 in the first innings, and Langridge (Ponsonby), whose tally was five for 63 in Grafton's first innings. The positions of the teams now are:— Team Won. Lost. Drawn. Pts. Ponsonby 5 2 — 19 North Shore .. „ 5 2 — 19 Eden ......; 5 2 — 18 Parnell , .... 5 2 — IS United Suburbs ~4 3 — 13 Y.M.C.A. ~..i 2 5 — 10 University ~t 1 6 — 10 Grafton l 6 — 5 SURPRISE OF DAY. SUBURBS DEFEAT EDEN. The surprise of the day was the first innings defeat of Eden by United Suburbs. The former in' their first strike the previous week registered 224, to which Suburbs, continuing with one wicket down for 48, replied with a merrily compiled 322. When stumps were drawn at the end of the day's play, Eden had lost one wicket for 44. Several of the batsmen for the victors indulged in big hitting, and strings of fours were punctuated by sixes. Martin (62), Leikia (58), Kerr (58), and Bushell (46) were particularly forceful. Scores are as follows:— EDEN" First innings 224 Second Innings. H. There were two outsanding features of the game between Ponsonby and Grafton, won by the former on the first inning's scoTe. The first was the great performance of Langridge, who either bowled or caught out all but two of the fifteen Grafton players who batted in the two innings. The second feature was the brilliant batting of E. Horspool, who registered perhaps the finest century in this season's club cricket. Horspool has always been aggressive, but never more so than on Saturday, with perhaps that juncture when he required about a dozen runs to reach his three figures. However he has not the patience of Job, and he simply couldn't restrain fciiw-lf from going down the pitch and lift' : a ball out of the ground and on to t j road running at the back of the stands. The previous Saturday Ponsonby had knocked together 388, which proved too big a hurdle for Grafton. The latter were dismissed in the first innings for 177, and in the second strike rattled together 212 for the loss of five wickets. Ponsonby thus securing a three-pointer. Scores:— PONSONBY. [ PARNELL WIN AGAIN. By defeating University on Saturday I Parnell put themselves in the running ! for the championship. When play was resumed University, with two wickets down for a few more than fifty, needed just over two hundred to beat Parnell's first innings effort. Halfway through the innings it was evident that the students would never get the runs, and the last wicket fell with the total just a few more than a hundred below the number required. In their follow-on University did better, and Parnell at no stage looked like making a four point win of their victory. PARNELL. First innings 2C7 UNIVERSITY.—First Innings. North Shore had little difficulty in registering a four-point win against Y.M.C.A. at Devonport, the match ending at twenty minutes to..six with the home side victorious by ten wickets. The association waived their elajm to send in Bow-ley and Elliott to complete their first innings. The pair opened the second venture, the visitors being faced with the task of making 171 to avoid an innings defeat. Bowley was compelled to retire when he had made 34, owing to a strained shoulder but Elliott continued to bat steadily and made a useful 63, receiving sound assistance from Lyon and Riddolls. The innings closed soon after the tea interval for 204, leaving 1 Shore to get 34 runs for victory. Dacre and Saunders scored the requisite number without being .»c pa rated, Dacre hitting up 18 in otic over, including a six. Details: — NORTH SHORE. First innings 214 Second Innings.
