UNEMPLOYED INSURANCE.
NATIONAL SCHEME SUGGESTED
MEETING OF INTERESTED PARTIES
Greater importance would seem to attach to the recent effort made in Auckland to stir up interest in a scheme of national unemployed insurance. The movement was initiated about three months ago by the Council of Christian Congregations, and at a conference of citizens a committee was set up with Mr. C. H. Fnrness as convener in order to further the proposal. During the past week Mr. Furness has circulated industrial unions in the city, local bodies and prominent employees' inviting them to send representatives to a meeting at the University Hall ort the evening of Thursday, February 16, matter serious consideration. The committee suggests that the question of unemployment demands the sei ious consideration of the Government and that the latter should take immediate steps to introduce a national unemployment insurance bill. It is pointed out that the merchants and private individuals are provided, with means of protecting their business premises, stocky homes and furniture against loss by fireand surely the worker was entitled to the same consideration. The matter was one of urgency, and the committee was of the opinion that a broad ■ statement of approval of the idea of unemployment insurance was as far as it was advisable to go at the present moment.
