Retrenchments Opposed ByUnionists. WANT STOP-WORK MEETINGS. iRf-ceived 12 noon ) MELBOURNE, this day. When speaking at Warrnambool with regard to the railway retrenchment the Premier, Mr. E. J. Hogan, said that the Railway Department, and the closer settlement activities bad become financial catastrophies. The State was losing £1.000.000 on these activities. Motor competition was a 6erious thing for the railways. The Trades Hall Council have decided to seek a conference with the Parliamentary Labour party to advise the Railway Union "to hold stop-work meetings until all men dismissed have been reinstated. There is much opposition in union circles to the retrenchment proposals.
