"THE BEST WAY."
PACK UP AND GET OUT.
STOWAWAY BROUGHT BACK. DEALT WITH LENIENTLY. "I have paid more maintenance than I could earn, so I thought that the best thing to do was to pack up and get right out of the country," said Charles Greethurst (62), when he was before the Police Court this morning on a charge of having stowed away on the Ruapehu at Auckland on November 26 last.
A representative of the New Zealand Shipping Company stated that Greethurst was discovered on board two days after the steamer cleared Auckland on her way to London. On arrival at Colon accused was transhipped to the s.s. Cambridge, which arrived in port yesterday. Greethurst worked satisfactorily on the return voyage and the company was not claiming any fare.
"I gave myself up," said accused. "I wasn't found."
"You gave yourself up because you were hungry," Mr. Hunt, S.M., told him.
Iu view of his age and also his previous good character, Mr. Hunt merely convicted and discharged the old chap. "I'm not letting the young stowaways off as lightlv, though," concluded the S.M.
