AMERICAN SUBMARINE DISASTER.—The U.S. submarine S4 was rammed by the Coastguard vessel Pauling off Provincetown on December 17. Only six out of a crew of 43 were saved. Telephone men aboard the salvage ship are here seen exchanging messages with Lieutenant-Commander EUsbere who went down 101 ft. to examine the S4. He was nearly drowned in mud, and it was only his call to these men that . saved his lift.
