NOTES AND IDEAS.

Jewellery is progressing along novel lines. The wide, finely ribbed kind of gold, or silver, or platinum, or of gold and silver, or gold and platinum, has rivals in bangles of two bands of python skin linked together with gold, then finished with a jad«, coral, or rosequartz pendant cut in cubic fashion.

In other sunnier Augusts Deauville, states "The Queen," may have been more picturesque—a gayer less stately Ascot with all the most fragile and exquisite of feather weight frocks that the mind of the Parisian dressmaker could devise. From the point of view of fashion, however, this season is decidedly the most interesting that there has been for some time. In the lounge of the Hotel de Xormandie coats of sable, real or one of the new marvellously clever imitations, are shown to tempt chilly visitors. At the races they are worn by all the smartest women. If the sun comes out they will not be discarded but the arms will be slipped out and the coats will then be worn cloak like round the shoulder, one hand holding the skirt together just below the waist line. This.,is considered the smartest way to wear any kind of long coat at Deauville.

Even wraps which arc not of fur closely resemble it- on the Deanville promenade, state? '"The Queen," for the latest thing of all is a velvet material, crushed and clipped so that it looks exactly like ponv skin. "Warm and cost looking, it has a great advantage over the real thing, in that it is far lighter in weight and is more supple, the resulting coat giving a far slimmer effect than if it were made of the real somewhat stiff and bulky skin. A soft chocolate brown is the favourite colour for these new pony velvet coats although many are Vorn in black by older women. Another imitation fur extremely popular for chilly days on the plage is a plush material cleverly imitating leopard skin. It is much in demand for sleeveless waistcoats and short little jackets to slip over jumper suits.
