CRIME IN AUCKLAND.

The review of Auckland's criminal record for 3927 supplied yesterday by Superintendent Wohlmann should do something to restore the self-respect and equanimity of the many Aucklanders whose peace of mind was disturbed by Commissioner Mcllveney's caustic strictures a few months ago. Either Superintendent Wohlmann is an exceptionally cheerful optimist, 01* Auckland's criminal classes have suffered a radical change of heart since Commissioner Mcllveney's sensational speech. For while there have been a considerable number of offences against the rights of property—due largely to bad times and unemployment—there have been very few crimes of a dangerous or violent character. Illegal conversion of motor cars is becoming an habitual practice in certain circles here, but not more so than in other large centres of population. And apart from these relatively minor offences, Superintendent Wohlmann seems to be quite satisfied with the situation. In particular, he commends the admirable behaviour of the huge crowds that gathered together during the holiday season. It says a great deal for the character of our people, and for the respect for law and order prevailing here, that the Christmas and New Year weeks have been marked by "a minimum of drunkenness and crime."
