HARD TIMES.
TRADE DEPRESSION.
Gloomy Christmas Forecasted
For N.S.W.
12,000 UNEMPLOYED SWELL.
(By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The general commercial depression which recently led to the closing of a number of mines and other concerns or otherwise materially shortening the number of employees is seriously augmenting the unemployed trouble.
In Sydney and elsewhere the unemployed ranks are certain to be increased and with the Christmas season bad times are regarded as assuredly ahead. * In addition to those thrown idle by the closing of works and the reduction of hands at various concerns there are about 12,000 casual unemployed registered at the State Labour Bureau. The Government is taking steps to provide relief as far as possible. It has already arranged to carry out relief works of a reproductive character, involving the expenditure of £23,000.
