PONSONBY IN LEAD.

SHORE MOVE UP FOUR. THRILLING FINISH AT KING'S COLLEGE. In fine weather, characterised by a eteady breeze that had dried out the wickets after rain in the early morning, the matches in the second series of the senior championship were concluded on Saturday. Two of the games went to. an interesting finish. North Shore managed to get Grafton out twice and snatch an outright win, while United Suburbs, wanting one run to get an outright win and having five minutes to play, were baulked of the secondinnings' win against Y.M.C.A. by three wickets falling in that time.

Eden defeated L T niversity on the first innings, and Ponsonby kept their position at the head of the list by beating Parnell on the first innings.

The championship points now are:— Ponsonby 7, Eden 6, North Shore 5, Y.M.C.A. 4. Grafton 3, United Suburbs 3, University 2, Parnell 2. VARSITY V. EDEN. ' EDEN'S FIRST INNINGS WIN. At one period in the match between •Varsity and Eden at Eden Park there appeared to be a possibility of a definite decision being arrived at. This was during the early stages of 'Varsity's second innings, when five wickets had fallen for 15 runs. Gee and Bannister came to the rescue, however, playing the bowling of the brothers Weir with great caution and taking 80 minutes to wipe off the first innings deficit of 58 runs. Following the loss of Gee's wicket. Matheson and Garrard were quickly dismissed, but then ensued another patient partnership, Bannister and Dow taking the total to 153. With only 20 minutes left to play after the close of the innings it was decided to draw stumps, Eden claiming the points for a win on the first innings.

Features of the day's play were steadybatting by Cooper and Brooke-Smith for Eden, and another admirable bowling performance by G. L. Weir, who took five wickets for 38 runs. At one period he had the flattering analysis of three for three, with two maiden overs out of three spells with the ball. Scores:— UNIVERSITY. First innings 154 Second" Innings. SHORE'S FOUR-POINTER. Shore gained a fotir-point win over Grafton by the narrowest of margins, the last Grafton .wicket falling in the final over of the day. On the first day of the match Shore knocked up 418 and Grafton on Saturday failed to reach this total in their first innings by over two hundred runs. In the follow-on the town team did well at the start and looked likely to play out time, but near the end a rot set in, the last- five wickets falling within a-quarter of an hour. NORTH SHORE.
