BRITAIN'S BURDEN.

HEAVY NATIONAL DEBT.

(British Official Wireless.)

RUGBY, November IS.

In the House of Commons, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Winston Churchill, said the amount of the national debt at March 31 last was £7,622,000,000, and the interest charged for the year ended March 31 was £31(5,000.000. The corresponding figures per head of population were £168 11/ and £0 19/11 respectively. These figures, however, taken by themselves would be misleading, since the nominal total afforded no measure of the burden of the debt, and the interest figure for 1926-1927 was abnormally high.
