OR THE LITTLE ONES
TWO NEW FRIENDS. COUNTRY COUSINS IN TOWN. My Dear Little Friends,—^. I've been hearing: so much lately in letters from some of you -who live on farms about all your little new calves, that I was quite pleased the other day to find a photo of some Highland cattle. You'll notice that they're not the same as ours. See how shaggy Eddy, the calf, looks; and his mother seems quite fierce with those long horns of hers. Really they're both the most peaceable creatures you can imagine* Lesbia knows her owner so well that she will come whenever he calls her, nosing eagerly for the tuft of _ sweet hay which he always brings. Eddie, on the other hand, is still a little shy. He suspects that the strange two-legged creature may harm him if he comes too close, and is only now beginning to understand that his fear's are groundless.
' You'd be surprised to see cattle like these on any *of our New Zealand farms, wouldn't you? Out here, where the climate is warm, animals don't need such thick coats. But in Scotland the winters are so bitter that they must have shaggy hair, to keep them from dying of cold. Lesbia and Eddie live in a mountainous district where snow lies thick on the ground nearly all the winter. V . vAt present they are staying in town, having come in for the great cattle show which is held every year. Both feel proud of themselves because they have won first prize, | |T> and are having, their photographs taken. When they return to the t 2 country there will be plenty to tell > ' % all their ■ friends about this exciting visit to the city. -
