WHANGAREI SHIPPING.
BOARD SEEKS BUSINESS.
THE PHOSPHATES TRADE
The Whangarei Harbour Board has opened up negotiations with a view to having the vessels which carry the phosphates from Nauru and Ocean Islands do their bunkering at the northern port.
The N.Z. Commissioner, Mr. A. F. Ellis, is reported to be in favour of the proposal, as a good deal of time would be saved if the vessels coaled at Whangarei instead of going to Westport.
It will require 38 cargoes, averaging three vessels per month, to carry the present phosphate orders to New Zealand, and should these-vessels bunker at Whangarei, their requirements in coal would be about 2600 tons monthly. In addition to the bunker coal, about 1000 tone of coal a month is used at the works on Ocean and Nauru Islands.
The board has decided to approach Messrs. Andrew Weir and Co., shipowners of Britain (through their Sydney office), who do mo6t of the freighting for the Phosphates Commission, with a view to carrying the negotiations further.
