SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Favoured with beautiful weather, the Ponsonby Croquet Club held a very successful "At Home" on their lawns on I Thursday. Progressive croquet was played and was very much enjoyed Ijv the players. There were three sessions, and the prizes were won as follow:— First session, A grade, Mrs. C. E. Hardley; B grade, Mrs. Hosking: second session, A grade, Mrs. Davey; B grade, Mrs. Edwards; third session, A grade, Mrs Edwards; B grade, Mrs. Buckle. A dainty afternoon tea was provided by the members.

A delightful rehearsal tea was given to Miss Joyce Stevenson last evening at the Amateur Operatic Siciety's rooms by some of the members of the society. After being congratulated on her approaching marriage, Miss Stevenson was presented with a token of esteem and goodwill in the form of a picture. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. A. Hunt, Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Leary, Miss Ince, Miss Craig, Misses Taylor, Nettleton, E. Rae, Poulton, and Messrs. Giesen, Goldie, Snell, Wallace, Bruce, Gordon, Hooper, Roberts, V F. de Guerier, Shayle George. The guest of honour wore a very smart biege georgette gown.

A sale of work was held yesterday afternoon in the old library at "Bishopscourt" by the ladies' committee of the Flying Angel Missions to Seamen to help increase the funds, which have been hard to collect; like so many other good causes it has suffered from the prevailing depression. There was a good collection oi stalls all well stocked, and business was very brisk during the afternoon. The produce and flower stall was attended by Mrs. Vickerman, Mrs. Preston Chambers, Mrs. A. Hardv, Mrs. Wcodhouse, and Miss Page. Cakes were i under the control of Miss Brown, Miss Bent, Mrs. Rowley and Mrs. Jones, and did an eager trade all the afternoon. The work stall was in charge of Mrs. C. West and Mrs. V. Twiname. Sweets. Miss Averill, Miss Austin, and Miss Simpkin. The tearoom did a smart trade all afternoon under Miss Conoflly. Mrs. Davidson, Mrs. Shearer, and Mrs. Fricker. During the afternoon musical items were given by Mr. and Mrs. Fenton and Miss Harrison sang "To a Miniature," and a selection from "La Boheme." • * * •

Last eveniner a social held in the Parish Hall, Takapuna, by the teachers, children and parents of the Sunday school connected with St. Paul's-bv-the-Sea.. The guest of honour was Miss M. Phillips, who has been one of the staff for seven years, and whose marriage to Mr. R. Stevens is shortly to take place. On the arrival of Miss Phillips the children came forward en masse to welcome her, and little Dorothy Malcolm, one of the youngest, presented her with a beautiful bouquet. A short programme, comprising two part-songs by the' children, piano solos by Sunday Mowbray, and a recitation bv Mary Spiers, song by Mr. Griffin, and a dialogue by Misses M. G. Christiansen and J. L. Webster was gone through and

much enjoyed. Mr. E. E. Grimwade, in eulogistic terms, sjwke of.'Miss Phillips' good work in the Sunday school, and the affection felt for lie* by the children, and presented her, on behalf of the teachers and parents, with a handsome cheque. Mr. Stevens replied on behalf of Miss Phillips. The vicar, Mr. W. G. Monckton, spoke of the faithful and pood work amongst the children done by Miss Phillips, and voiced regret at her loss.

A most successful bridge party was held at Mrs. T. Davis* residence Wynyard Street, yesterday afternoon to" help swell the funds of St. Pauls bazaar. The first prize was won by Miss Colwiil and the other prize by Mrs. Owen.

The Kaitieke Gun Club's first annual ball was a very successful function, due in large measure to the energetic committee, Mrs. Sage, Mrs. J. Waldegrave, Mrs. Rutherford and Mrs. H. Shires. Visitors were presents from Taumarunui and other towns in the district. A balloon dance was won by Mr. C. Edwards and Miss Karam. The visiting delegates to the Girl Guide conference were entertained by Mrs. Roy Wilson at an enjoyable tea yesterday afternoon, in the" Ellerslie racecourse tea kiosk. To mark the occasion of her approaching marriage, Miss Joyce Stevenson was entertained last evening by members of the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society at a "Rehearsal Tea," in the society's club rooms, Grafton Road. The gathering was a particularly happy one, and the guest of honour was the recipient of a suitable memento of her operatic days. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. L, P. Leary, Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Hunt, Misses C. Craig, Gladys Fowler, K. Ince, Beryl Nettleton, B. Poulton, Ethel Rae, D. and L. Taylor, Messrs. W. Wallace Bruce, H. T. Goldie, F. E. de Guerrier, J. N. Gordon, R. B. Giesen, G.
