POOR KNIGHTS ISLANDS.

MAORI CLAIMS OWNERSHIP.

TRIBAL MASSACRE RECALLED.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WHANGAREI, this day.

Amongst the cases mentioned to-day at a sitting of the Tokerau Native Land j Court was one in which Pouaka Whei Whei, of Whangaruru, claimed possession of the Poor Knights Islands. .It is contended that Pouaka is the sole surviving lineal descendant of the chief of the Ngatiawi tribe, all the males of which, except one, were massacred by Hongi about the year 1822. The claimant owns lands at Whangaruru and at Matarau. He can neither read nor write, as his grandmother prevented him as a child from coming- into, contact with children of lesser rank and, consequently, he never went to school.
