BOWLING.

VISITORS PROM TAURANGA. ENTERTAINED BY CENTRE PRESIDENT. A DAY AT DEVONPORT.

(By TRUNDLER.)

Representatives of the two clubs at Tauranga are spending three days in the city, and yesterday was devoted to an official visit to Devonport. It turned out a brilliant success, in keeping with the perfect weather, and the visitors declared that when they go home, and tell the other members of their clubs what an enjoyable time they had here, they will all want to come next time.

The visitors numbered 22, but they sought the assistance of their two delegates on the centre, and are playing six rinks each day.. In the morning they met the Devonport Club, and secured a fairly comfortable win. They were welcomed by the president of the club, Mr. H. S. W. King, who informed them that he first rode into Tauranga over forty years ago, and afterwards lived for many years in an adjoining district.

The visitors were entertained at lunch at the Esplanade Hotel by the president of the centre, Mr. James Pascoe, who also invited the centre executive to meet them, and a return was then made to the green, for the principal match of the visit. The executive, being insufficient in numbers, had adopted the president's happy suggestion to seek the assistance of former officials of the centre, in order to make up five rinks, and another rink played members of the Devonport executive. The morning's results were completely reversed, for instead of only losing one match, as in the morning, they won only one, the details being as follows: — Tauranga v. Centre Executive, —Whiting, Ellery, - Stewart, Guinness. 23, v. S. Coldicutt, G. M. Reid, A. E. Wliitteu, E. B. Wright, IS; Mountfort, Newsham. Schnackenberg, Torrance, 19, v. A. M. Bryden, J. Carlaw, M. M. McCallum, G. B. Osmond, 22; Smith, Edwards, Henderson, Moncur, 17, v. J. W. Hardlev, P. E. Mason, G. L. Gladding, J. Pascoe, 26; Mackay, Bickers, Teasey, Dive, 13, v: H Purser, D. Jones, W. Coltman, C. J. Schnaucr, 27; Bovd, Bell, Ward. Bunting, 12 v. A. H. Yeoman, A. B. Barter. A. C. Tonkin, J. M. Thomson, 28. Tauranga v. Devonport Executive.— McKenzie, Moffatt, Pemberton, Hammond, 21, v. J. McGregor, H. S. W. King, R. N. Melville, W. F. Warren, 24.

The competitors were entertained at afternoon tea by Mr. and Mrs. Pascoe, the latter receiving the usual heart) assistance from her relatives and friends, and the dainty repast met with cordial expressions of appreciation ' from both local and visiting guests. Mr. Pascoe presided, and made special reference to the opportunity given to the visitors to meet some of the former stalwarts in Auckland bowling management, for there were present three former Dominion presidents, Messrs. McCallum, Coltman and Hardley; a former Centre president. Mr. Schnauer; the late secretary, Mr. Bryden; besides two veterans of the old Northern Bowling Association days of thirty years' ago, Messrs. Carlaw and Osmond.

Mr. Coltman acknowledged the compliment on behalf of these veterans, and admitted that it was pleasant to realise that after doing their best for the sport in the earlier days the present leaders were not relegating them to" the scrapheap. He himself had been bowlfhg for 34 years, his first club in Auckland being Devonport, which he joined, 20 years ago. Mr. Hardley congratulated the president in paying the visitors the compliment of meeting such a unique gathering of veterans, the men who had done so much to bring bowling to its present high standard, and Mr. Carlaw responded on behalf of the old brigade, for it was over forty years since he joined the Auckland Bowling Club, then the only club in the North Island. Mr. King complimented the visitors on their discretion in selecting his club as one that they would like to meet, the only difficulty being that all the members wanted to have the pleasure of meeting them. On behalf of the visitors, the president of the Tauranga Club, Mr. George Henderson, thanked Mr. Pascoe for arranging the splendid gathering, and hoped to have the opportunity of reciprocating his hospitality before l<?ng. The secretary, Mr. C. Whiting, explained how the club came to join the Auckland Centre, after being affiliated with the South Auckland Centre, and he thought that when the'Te Puke bowlers heard about the present visit it would stimulate their wish to join the centre also. Mr. F. E. Boyd, president of the Tauranga South Club, also gave a cordial invitatioin to the executive to visit his club, and he would be glad to entertain them at his own home. Mr.'Bradshaw Dive, Mayor of Tauranga, made a humorous reference to the standing of bowling, which now appeared to have taken its place as one of the "primary industries" of the Dominion. His father was a bowler, now 96J years old, and he himself thoroughly enjoyed the game. Through the good offices of Mr. G. M. Reid, the visitors spent. the evening at the eoncert given by the Royal Auckland Choir.
