GOVERNMENT HEADQUARTERS
WELLINGTON SEEKS REVENUE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
The Wellington City Council derives no rates from Government properties, the unimproved value of which is between £3,000,000 and £5,000,000.
This statement' was made by the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, last niglit, and he added that the estimate he had given was a low one. If the Government paid rates on the present basis the City Council would receive a sum approximating £25,000. At present the council received an annual payment of a little over £400 on account of properties which were in the, nature of business concerns.
Mr. Troup said the City Council could do nothing just now, but after the new valuation was completed possibly the council could take the matter up with the Government, with a view to securing some readjustment. He did not profess to know anything of the position in other cities, but he pointed out that Wellington was the seat of Government, and that necessitated, besides Parliament Buildings and Government offices, headquarters for the Public Trust, the Railways, etc., Government House, Ministerial residences and other property.
