THE RANGITOTO HOAX.
LONDON PAPER'S EMBROIDERY
"ISLAND IN ERUPTION."
Readers of the "Star" will recollect a recent "hoax," when a serious blasting accident was reported to have occurred on Rangitoto Island, and a launch was hastily dispatched to investigate, whilst ambulances waited in readiness at the Auckland launch steps. A worldly-wise London paper, in publishing the facts of the above case, stated that Rangitoto was in eruption, hundreds of people having been killed and injured, whilst doctors and nurses, in high-powered speed boats, were rushed to the island. In the meantime all the picture theatres in Auckland had been converted into hospitals for the reception of the injured. Ambulances were hurried to the waterfront, and the whole of the population were awaiting the launches' return, when it was disclosed that it was the biggest hoax Auckland has ever suffered from.
