IRISH PROBLEM.
Balance Of Power Held By Farmers , Party. ALLEGIANCE REFUTED. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copjrijpit.) LONDON, October 11. The Irish Republican leader, Mr. Eamonn de Valera, states that the attitude of the members of the Fianna Fail toward the oath of allegiance has not ehanged. They will refuse to give allegiance exeept to tlie Irish nation.
The Dublin correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says Mr. de Valera's declaration shows that he and his followers do not heed the hierarchy's pastoral, in whieh the sin of perjurv was strongly denounced. Most of the members of the Dail have now been sworn in. It is uncertain how the election of President -vvill result. Six members of the Farmers' party hold the position in their hands as between Mr. W. T. Cosgrave and Mr. de Valera.—(A. and X.Z. and Srdnev "Sun.")
Cosgrave Elected President By Six Votes. QUIET OPENING SESSION. \j (Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 11. At the opening of the sixth Dail the galleries were crowded but there were no scenes similar to those before the general election. The Fianna Fail members again took the oath.
Mr. Cosgrave was re-elected President by 76 to 70 votes. There were no other nominations. AH the Fanners party and the Independents supported Mr. Cosgrave, Labour, and the Fianna Fail opposing. Captain Redmond and the other National League members abstained from voting. Professor Hayes was re-elected Speaker amid applause from all sides, though Mr. de Valera unsuccessfully proposed to reduce the present salary from £1700 to £1000. Mr. Blythe informed Captain Redmond that there would be no chance to repeal the Public Safety Act. '
