CANTERBURY MARKETS.
BIG DROP IN POTATOES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The event of the week has been the big drop in the potato market. The Kurow took 7200 sacks on. Wednesday from Lyttelton, as against an earlier estimate of about 3000, and the Wingatui, which left this afternoon, took 2074 sacks, in addition to 1200 from Timaru. Since Monday the market has gone down by 15/ to 20/ a ton. September deliveries were sold this afternoon at £4 10/ a ton, f.0.b.5.i., a drop of £5 5/, and Octobers at £5, as against £6 a week ago. Consequent on the weather in New South Wales, a sharp inquiry has again set in from Sydney for oats, both A and B Gartons. It is estimated that by vessels leaving within the next week 27,000 sacks will be shipped to Sydney. Values here as a result have firmed substantially and A's have been sold at up to 3/6, f.0.b.5.i., and B's at 3/3 to 3/4. Further interest has been added by inquiries from England, where, apparently, wet weather has seriously affected the harvest. However, no actual business has eventuated so far. Values on trucks for A Gartons are 2/10 a bushel and for B's 2/7 to 2/7%. Chaff has also firmed in sympathy and the price has advanced about 10/ a ton during the week. The f.o.b.s.i price is now £5 10/ and the on-truck price £3 10/. Wheat is also firm. It slackened during the week to 6/6 f.0.b., but is back again to 6/7%. Most of the business being done is in fowl wheat. There is no change in the seed market and there is a firm atmosphere, particularly in cowgrass and cocksfoot. The local inquiry has now set in and there has been quite an amount of farmers' business.
