TO-DAY'S RACING.

AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB SPRING MEETING OPENED. TE KARA TAKES THE CUP. MEMBERS' HANDICAP TO KING SMOCK. LEVENSIDE AND ROYAL DOULTON MAIDEN WINNERS. GREY LYNN HURDLES TO KARAHU. The Avondale Jockey Club opened their meeting at Ellerslie to-day. Rain fell during the morning, but cleared 'before the first race was run. There was a very fair attendance, considering the -weather, while the course was very heavy. The Opening Event. Whaka King and Yaqui was the favourite bracket, and carried £25 more than the Restaurant and Royal Doulton combination, with Levenside and Master Noel next in request. When the field was let go, Whaka King was in front from Scaramouche, Royal and Master Noel. Whaka King and Royal led across the top from Master Noel, Levenside, Edifice and Scaramouche, and were still in front as they turned for home, with Master Noel, Levenside, Edifice and Yaqui handy. Levenside then came through and won by three-quarters of a length from Yaqui, who beat Whaka King by two lengths. Master Noel was fourth, with Acushla, Edifice and Charitaine next. Second Division. In the second division Taurimu, Cynthia N., Brampton and Royal Doulton were the early leaders, but across the top Brampton and Good Boy were in charge from Taurimu, Cynthia N., Royal Doulton and Wyoming. Brampton and Good Boy led into- the straight from Royal Doulton, Wyoming and Taurimu, but in the run home Royal Doulton won by three-quarters of a length from Restaurant, who beat Wyoming by a length. Diamond Queen was fourth, followed by Cynthia N. A Close Finish. Slump was the only scratching for the Grey Lynn Hurdles, leaving a field of seven. York Abbey was made favourite, carrying about £60 more than Rahepoto, with Kamehameha next best backed. When the field settled down York Abbey was in charge from Blago, Karamu, Rahepoto, Stonewall, Kamehameha, and Glenotus. Running along the straight Karamu went to the front, attended by York Abbey, Rahepoto, Blago, Kamehameha, and Glenotus. Along the back Karamu was eight lengths clear of York Abbey, Rahepoto, and Kamehameha. Karamu was first to turn for borne from Rahepoto, Kamehameha, and York Abbey, who were in line. York Abbey fell at the last liurdle, due to a dog running out and getting in his way. In a good finish Karamu stayed on to get the verdict from Rahepoto by half a length, with Kamehameha threequarters of a length back, third. Glenotus came with a good run at the finish and got close up fourth. The others pulled up. Gala Day Falls. Thirteen went to the post for the Members' Handicap, and Automne was made favourite, carrying about £2SO more than Gold Acre, with Gala Day and King Smock next fancied. When the field got into their stride Arch Queen, Gold Acre, Gala Day, and Waltzer were leading, but crossing the top Value ran to the front, attended by Day Guard, Gold Acre, Waltzer, Gala Day, Arch Queen, King Smock, and Mosaic. Value was first to turn for home, but was closely attended by Day Guard, Gala Day, King Smock, Quincoma, and Mosaic, all racing in a bunch. Gala Day fell, but was not injured, while W. Bagby, his rider, was also able to walk away. King Smock came through to win by half a length from Waltzer, who beat Day Guard by two lengths and a-half. Automne was fourth, with Quincoma, Mosaic, Arch Queen, Value, Berinthia, Carinthia, Luxurious, and Gold Acre next. The Big Event. Star Stranger was the only defection from the Avondale Cup, for which Master Doon was elected favourite, being about £150 better backed than Te Kara, while Te Monanui and Mask also had friends. Te Kara, Master Doon, and Cohesion were first to show out, but passing the stand Cohesion was showing the way to Queen Arch and Master Doon, with Te Kara, Te Monanui, Eden Hall, Desert Glow, Lord Star, Royal Mint, Alloway, Mask, and Mint Leaf next. Along the back Cohesion was attended by Queen Arch, Master Doon, Te Kara, Eden Hall, Desert Glow, Te Monanui, Allowav, Lord Star, Royal Mint, Mask, and Mint Leaf. Cohesion was still in charge across the top from Eden Hall, Queen Arch, Te Kara, Alloway, Master Doon, Desert Glow, Te Monanui, and Lord Star. Cohesion was first to turn for home, attended by Queen Arch, Te Kara, Eden Hall, Alloway, and Mask. In the run to the post Te Kara headed Cohesion and beat him by a neck, with Eden Hall two lengths away third. Royal Mint was fourth, with Mint Leaf, Mask, Alloway, Queen Arch, Lord Star, Desert Glow, Te Monanui, and Master Doon following in that order.
