TRADE IN BRITAIN.

Effect Of Foreign Competition Felt. WAGE REDUCTION ESSENTIAL. LONDON, September 18. The "Weekly Dispatch" says the employers' section of the National Wool and Allied Textile Industrial Council announces the termination of the wages agreement in the industry owing to bad trade due to foreign competition. Trades union leaders have twice opposed Bradford manufacturers in an application for a protective duty to keep out German goods, the purchases of which have increased to an alarming degree in the last 18 months.

The employers now insist that both a duty and a reduction in wages are essential. There is thus a possibility of a bitter and costly struggle. A quarter of a million workers will be involved. (Sydney "Sun.")
