SINGLE SCREW. A recent attempt to determine accurately the relative value of single and twin screws 7 on vessels has left the position still doubt- * ful. The motor tankers Bianca and Raila, * of 11,250 and 11,180 tons displacement res spectively, were recently made the subjects of a series of careful tests. The Bianca is > a single screw vessel and the Raila a twin ) screw. Both vessels have 6-cylinder f Diesel engines, developing 2800 h.p., and are - practically identical in design. Careful records of the speeds, oil and fuel consumpe tion were kept, but a careful examination .. of these showed that there was nothing to l ohoose between the two vessels. The only I appreciable difference was that the single , screw vessel needed slightly more power for a given speed than did the other. The results of the tria*s are not likely to Influence the opinions of shipowners, gays "The Motor Ship." The smaller staff and the s fewer and ' simpler working pans of the 1 single screw engine are offset toy the slightly * lower initial cost and the lighter individual parts of the twin screw engine. The Norwegians prefer the twin ecrew, but British owners, who have always favoured the . single-screw cargo steamer, have several [ single-screw motor vessels, designed to do fourteen and fifteen knots, now building at various yards.
