WHISKY AND TOBACCO.
The commercial joke of the season stands against dealers in whisky and tobacco. Not long after the Tariff Revision Commission commenced to hear evidence, rumours were given currency that an increase was bound to be made in the duty on spirits, and, although these qtrietooad dflflm later, feelings of uneasiness and of premonition remained with a good many merchants. Between the date of the termination of the inquiry and the first definite reference in the House of Representatives to the appearance of the resolutions, another period of uncertainty existed. However, many of those interested in spirits, tobacco, and cigarettes decided to take no chances of being mulcted in additional duty, with the result that clearances from bond during recent months heen, abnormally heavy.
