CANTERBURY DOWNED.
OTAGO DEFEATS RANFURLY SHIELD HOLDERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Meeting Canterbury on a hard ground, under perfect conditions, Otago were iii'st to attack. A forward rush carried play to inside the twenty-five, where Callander missed with a penalty. Then Dalley broke through and was backed up by the forwards. A hot tussle ensued i at the Otago end until Holden relieved. J Dalley marked in face of a rush, but ! Otago returned. A passing movement | was checked by Steel tackling Stewart. | After several line-outs on Canterbury I territory, Hay dashed up the field. A great opening was spoiled by Payne dropping a pass. Otago had to force. Later a brilliant movement by Hay, Carleton, and Dalley pierced the defence, Dalley scoring. Steel's kick missed. A minute later the Canterbury pack bore on the Otago line and a score seemed certain until Jeffries got offside. Otago attacks followed, Sonntag showing up again. Hay got away for Canterbury, Otago having to force immediately. Play then went to the other end, and Canterbury had to force. Excitement was caused by Stewart intercepting and racing through, but Harris stopped him, ball and all, with three Otago men alongside. Canterbury pressed vigorously, and only great tackling kept them out, Steel, Hay and Burrows being thrown in turn a few yards from the line. Fine kicking by Mitchell relieved Otago, and from a great dribbling rush Marslin scored for Otago and Callender converted. ' Led by Gray, Canterbury attacked, Steel being pushed out near the corner. At half-time the score was:— Otago 5 Canterbury 3 Canterbury throughout were without McGregor, Lilburne, Scrimshaw and White, and Otago without Lindsay and Webb. The second spell began with an Otago rush. Steel marked, but the kick gained little. Otago were penalised for obstruction, but this did not repel theirfierce attack, which was stopped by Dalley and Harris, the latter grassing Stewart on the line. Then Hay and Robilliard dashed to half-way. When tackled Robilliard in-passed to Grey, who was tackled with the ball. The Otago forwards came round and threw Canterbury back. Holden made a fine opening lor Stewart to score, amid cheers. Peterson's kick was poor. The crowd rose to its toes when Holden got over, Heazlewood converting, and Otago led by 13 to 3. "Playing with remarkable vim at length a kick by Dalley placed Canterbury on attack, but not for long. Stewart intercepted brilliantly and ran thirty yards, but Harris floored him on the line. Burrows, with a splendid burst provided a reply. The backs got possession, and Steel flashed across at the corner. The' kick failed. I With twenty minutes to go, Otago led by 13 to 6. Canterbury made desperate efforts, and Steel missed a penalty in front of.the posts. The last stages were thrilling, Canterbury going hard. A great pot by Steel from half way just fell under the posts, and the game ended:— Otago <•••?» 13 Canterbury «s ®
