"Yesterday, in a house at Wellington Street, Freeman's Bay, he struck her on the head with a hammer. The woman is at present in the hospital, where she will remain for two or three days. Her injuries are not serious When arrested Smillie had two sheath knives in his possession and stated that he was going to take his own life."
