CAMP FOR MOTORISTS.

URGED BY TOURIST LEAGUE.

CORNWALL PARK FAVOURED.

APPEAL TO CITY COUNCIL

The need of a properly equipped motor camp in Auckland is a matter which is being brought before the notice of the Auckland City Council by the New Zealand Tourist League, which points out that reciprocal arrangements should be made for motorists who visit the city, particularly in view of the fact that there are already forty motor camping sites in various parts of the North Island.

The League contends that the proposed camp should be under the control of the City Council, that the area should be within two or three miles of the centre of the city, and preferably from six to ten acres in extent. It is urged that the property should have a sunny aspect, be on a slope, well drained, and have dumps of trees. It is claimed that if a number of small cabins or bungalettes were provided they would be used all the year round by farmers, or people from provincial towns visiting the city for shopping or a night's entertainment; further, that arrangements could be made for the sale of benzine and groceries.

The league says that one of the best sites would be in the fields below the kiosk on the north side of Cornwall Park, or the paddock adjoining the Costley Home. There were other possible sites at Orakei and Kohimarama. It was considered that Mount Hobson was too cold and bare, that the Domain on the east side was too high, bare and limited, and that it would take some years before trees could be grown at the Stone Jug. There was a possibility of sites in some of the gullies leading from Hobson Bay to Remuera.

In conclusion the league urges that another summer should not be allowed to pass without providing a camping site near the city for motorists. There is a small camp at Henderson, where during a period of eighteen months the owners of 800 cars paid for admission, the charge being 4/ a day or 2/6 an afternoon.
