MEAT WORKS EXTENSIONS.
ATTITUDE OF GO
EACH CASE ON ITS MERITS. ;
>By Telegraph. — Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON", Wednesday. J That the Government might be trusted j not concur in any extensions the use' of which would be against the public ; interest, was stated in the House of Re- j presentatives by the Prime Minister (Mr.' Coates) in reply to the member for Gis- j borne, who asked a question relating to the extension of Vestey Bros.' Freezing i Works in the Auckland district. Mr. W. D. Lysnar wanted to know whether the Prime Minister would give an assurance that the firm mentioned would not be allowed to rebuild or
improve their works. If they were I allowed to make improvements, Mr. Lys- j nar considered that it would be contrary j to the spirit and intention of the legisla- | tion already passed by Parliament. Ac- j cording to Press reports, Vestey Bros.' I application had been approved by the Meat Board. "It is against the interests of the producers," said Mr. Lysnar. "that this oversea-owned freezing works should be allowed to increase its capa- j city, or to have its facilities of trading improved." j "Applications received from time to: time for the concurrence of the Govern- j ment in proposals to extend meat-export j slauglvteriwmsas must necessarily be considered on tlftir merits, in the lipht of | the circumstances existing at tkp time; when the. applications are made." *,->ifl > the Prime Minister.
