CABLE BREAK REPAIRED.

RETURN OF THE LRIS. After repairing a break in the Pacific cable near Norfolk Island the steamer Iris returned to Auckland this morning. The steamer sailed from Auckland on August 25 and arrived at the locality of the fault on August 28, bnt owing to stormy weather was compelled to seek shelter under the lee of Norfolk Island. Two days later she began work and located the cable without difficulty. The cable was lying on a very rocky bottom and had been completely severed by constant chafing.

Later soundings were taken and the cable replaced on a softer bottom.
