WANGANUI MEETING.

MASK AND GRAND KNIGHT. BOTH IN GOOD FETTLE. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WANGANUI, this day. Most of the visiting horses have arrived for the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting, which opens on Thursday, and the tracks are very busy. So far as the Marangai Handicap and the Flying Handicap are concerned the most impressive gallops yesterday morning were those registered by Mask and Grand Knight. The former worked before breakfast and had Damaris as a companion over six furlongs, with Mask on the outer. Both were wide out, the going being then very dead after rain through the night. The time registered was 1.18 1-5, both going nicely at the end, Mask especially so.

After breakfast Star Stranger and Eden Hall went seven furlongs together. They did not cover so much ground ae-Mask. They left the quarter behind in 25s and the three furlongs in 37 l-5s and the full distance in 1.29 2-5, being together at the end.

Later on Grand Knight alone, with a good weight up, slipped over five furlongs in 1.2 3-5. He ran the first furlong in 12s, the second in 21 4-5s and three furlongs in 36 4-ss. It was an attractive performance and he appears to be better now than for a long time past. As the result of their gallops Mask and Grand Knight have come more than ever into favour for the double. Mask will be ridden by B. Morris and G. Ridgway will be on Grand Knight.

Joy King, who worked by himself early was not asked to do his best, but strode over half a mile in good style.

In the Shade (Bryce) went particularly well in a six-furlong gallop in company with Le Choucas (W. H. Jones). The former has evidently benefited greatly by his race at Mart on, though he is still capable of improvement.

Kiosk and Star Area went five fur* longs in good style, Star Area being slightly in front, but Kiosk was going nicely.

Great Charter is likely to be favourite for the Wanganui Guineas. He had Doree as companion over six furlongs yesterday morning and put plenty of dash into his work, in covering the distance in 1.17 4-5.

Prince Humphrey beat Wet Paint and Quantum .in., a sprint over three furlongs, which they left behind in 375. The other two-year-olds, Knightlike and Shot Silk, were associated over three furlongs, but they had not so much pace up at the peg as the other three and took a second longer to cover the journey. ■■—

Whenuanui, who is in great hears, moved very freely in good pace work, and on hie present galloping he u being ticked off as likely to give a good account of himself in the Flying Handicap.

Lysander looks to be a bit on the big side. He was not asked to make time yesterday -morning but on Saturday ran the firet tjuree of five furlongs at a great bat and finished nicely in 4.5 4-5. He is. a lazy track worker, but can be depended upon to do much better when the colours are up. Still, he may need a race '. or two to be right at bis best.

Bank Note looks all the better for his race at Marton. He will be ridden in the Durie Hack by,D. C. Watte.

-San Pedro is said to be a much improved hurdler and his prospects in the Okehii Hurdles are considered very bright. -.■-.;

Degage i> in fine form and is much fancied in some quarters for the Marangai Handicap.

The following riding engagements are announeed;-~Marangai - Handicap: Tβ r Monanui (It. McTavfeh), Beacon Light (F. WaddeU), Eden Hall (T. Green), Mask (B. H. Morris). Flying Handicap: Reremonana (L. G. Morris), Lysander (B. H. Morris), Shirley (F. WaddeU), Oration (L. George). Kiosk (D. Watts), Laughing Prince (F. Potter)..

The Paper Money fijly Chit looks to be well forward and. is sprinting in fine style. . She is engaged in the Debutante Stakes.

' Tβ Monanui, Royal-Mint and Oration all look in good order.

Fred Tilly is expected to arrive to-day with Laughing Prince, Shining Armour, Otairi, Freehold and Ayro.
